Food Aggression

Problems started manifesting themselves soon after I took him in. Adi was extremely food aggressive. Moreover, he did not give any warning growls, he would just lunge at our two other dogs. In most, if not all cases, the dogs just happened to be passing near to Adi and had no awareness, let alone interest, in whatever chew Adi had, or was being offered.

I remember once, carrying a new, unopened 12kg food sack past the front of the house and placing it on the outside table. I’d put it there so I could better read the feeding amounts. One of the other dogs walked by and Adi went for him. This was some weeks / months into having him and I’d not realised that he’d be triggered by an unopened food bag.

It took many months of acclimatisation and training. I invested a lot if time and patience, taking things very slowly and I managed Adi carefully, so as to avoid any incidents or set-backs.

Over time, Adi realised that he was in a place where food was guaranteed and chews were plentiful. Eventually, we got to the point where the three dogs could be given chews outside, either out on the property or on their beds, and enjoy them within close proximity of each other, in harmony.

Adi became like the other two and engaged in the swapping of chews; leaving his chew and going for the abandoned chew of one of the others, allowing in turn his first chew to be taken over by one of the other dogs.

He also learned to growl and give warnings in this way. Although he’s got a lot better in this respect towards our other two dogs (meaning we’ve had zero incidents for many years) it is not a given under new or different circumstances.
