Introduction

Adi at the rescue

Adi came to us in the autumn of 2016. I saw his photo on the website of a rescue organisation.

They reckoned he was around 8 months old at the time. Apparently, he and his brother had been stray puppies living “in the wild”, that a lady fed for some time and then eventually brought to the rescue.

I was told that he was very friendly and good with other dogs, that he was placid and calm.

He seemed to get along well with my shepherd dog when I took them both out for a test walk.

That same day, I brought Adi home.

In the very beginning, Adi was friendly and submissive with the other dogs and mostly ignored our cat.

However, it soon became clear that Adi was not as he’d been described. With hindsight, I realised that he had been shut down because of the kennel environment, where many dogs shared the same space and, as a young pup, he was low in the pecking order. His true character started to reveal itself after we brought him home.

Adi was food aggressive and would attack my two dogs without warning, which was very disconcerting to them. Initially they had both been friendly and open towards him, but they started to avoid him.

We had lived in a harmonious state, our two dogs and cat got on well with each other and respected boundaries. Adi was a radically different ingredient in this mix.

We had a long path ahead of us!
